Overview

Diarrhea

Diarrhea refers to bowel movements that are loose and watery. Diarrhea is common and usually does not require medical attention. However, sometimes it can be dangerous and signal a more serious medical problem. If diarrhea persists, you should talk with your physician.

The following list is a guideline and is not a complete list. Please talk with your physician if you have any concerns about your symptoms.

Symptoms:

You may need to seek immediate medical attention if:

  • Your diarrhea has lasted for more than two days
  • You are dehydrated
  • You have a high fever of 102 degrees or greater
  • You have severe pain in your abdomen or rectum.
  • Your stools appear different (stools contain blood or stools are black and tarry)
